With ASCE President Dr. Feniosky Peña-Mora visiting Sacramento for a civil engineering historic landmark dedication ceremony the next day, on Friday June 20th, our members guests had a pleasant dinner together again at Old Spaghetti Factory in Sacramento.

Dr. Pena-Mora shared his personal and professional examples of why ASCE has been important to him. As the ASCE President, and being active in ASCE for his long career, he shared stories of how ASCE has brought people together for rewarding relationships – both professional and personal.
Here are four interesting facts about Feniosky:.
-
- He is currently the Dean of Engineering and Sciences at Tec Monterrey
- Former Executive Director of Columbia
University’s Center for Buildings, Infrastructure and Public Space - He was a Commissioner of the NYC Dept. of Design/Construction
- He received his Masters and PhD in Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Following his talk, which was more of a “fireside chat,” we recognized the new ASCE Life Members of the Capital Branch from the class of 2024 and 2025. Sue Hida, former President of the Capital Branch and Region 9 Governor, was one of them in attendance.
Then we recognized Richard “Dick” Weitzenberg, our long-time Treasurer for the Capital Branch, who received the Region 9 Life Member of the YEAR award. Thank you Dick for being such as reliable and dedicated steward of our finances over the years! (He is eager to implement his succession plan, so if you like working with finances please get in touch with us promptly.)

We also heard from Chuck Spinks of the ASCE History & Heritage Committee. He was instrumental in getting recognition for the Summit Tunnel as a national civil engineering historic landmark site.
Here is our current ASCE Capital Branch President, Omar Lopez, looking at some historical photos documenting the construction of the Summit Tunnel.
